What an NYC Production Needs Before a Drone Flight

Flight plan: proposed date and backup date, operating window, exact takeoff and landing area, intended route, altitude and duration.
Location: address or coordinates, property contact, any street or sidewalk impact, nearby airports or heliports, and whether the location is in or near controlled airspace.
Production plan: crew and talent positions, how the public will be kept clear, emergency procedures, insurance requirements and additional insured language.
Camera needs: aircraft and camera package, lens or payload, frame rate, monitoring or live-view requirements, shot list and production schedule.

2. FLIGHT & SAFETY PLAN — Build the route, takeoff and landing zones, crew positions, contingency plans, emergency procedures, and requested operating window.
3. AGENCY COORDINATION — Prepare and submit NYPD materials, pursue FAA airspace approvals, and coordinate MOME, DOT, locations, and other stakeholders when applicable.
4. APPROVAL & FLIGHT DAY — Track questions and revisions, confirm final conditions, brief the production, and execute within the approved plan.
NYPD, FAA, MOME and DOT: Who Approves What
One flight can involve several approvals. We map them separately so production knows who controls what.
NYPD & DOT — NYPD, in consultation with DOT, reviews applications for takeoff and landing in NYC. The operating location, flight details and public-safety plan all matter.
FAA — Federal rules still govern the flight. Depending on the airspace and mission, the operation may need controlled-airspace authorization, LAANC, a waiver or another FAA approval.
MOME, Parks & Property — A film permit or separate location permission may also be required when vehicles, equipment, staging, parks or controlled property are involved. Flights capturing or transmitting media also require community-board notice and posted notice near the approved site.
TIMING — Start early. Review time depends on the location, airspace, notice requirements, complete materials and agency questions. Approval cannot be guaranteed.

CAN DRONES FLY LEGALLY IN NYC? — Yes. A compliant commercial operation generally needs FAA authority, an NYPD takeoff and landing permit, location or property permission, and the safety controls required by the approved plan.
HOW EARLY SHOULD PRODUCTION CALL? — As soon as the location and dates are real. Complex airspace, parks, street impacts, community notice or application revisions can add time.
DOES THE NYPD PERMIT REPLACE FAA APPROVAL? — No. City takeoff and landing permission and federal airspace authority are separate.
